The wide-ranging artistic practice of Joris Van de Moortel transpires as a distinctly personal mythical universe, an intricate tangling and de-tangling in which his seven elements emerge and set the course. The alchemy of these seven elements, consisting of Nature, Wax, Fire, Smoke, White, Glass and Vandalism, comes into play in the work created for Hibernus#1.
Based upon the scene of an alchemist’s kitchen in a 16th century engraving by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the edition consists of seven lithography prints – each altered by one of the seven elements of Van de Moortel’s artistic practice. Soaked in wax, lit on fire, printed in white and buried in soil, the components come together in a hinged sculptural structure, like the ingredients of a cookbook for the artist’s performative mess/mass.
The iteration of The Alchemist is enhanced by the archetypal figures of the artist’s own Tarot deck, weaving this edition deeper into the complex world of a master magician.
