In 2008, the contemporary art space De Garage (Cultural Center Mechelen) started a project in and with the Frans Masereel Centrum. This was done at the request of Jan Verlinden, then head of the Arts and Heritage Agency. Six established artists (Ronny Delrue, Honoré d’O, Kendell Geers, Vincent Geyskens, Tina Gillen and Pieter Vermeersch) were asked two questions. “What role can printmaking play in the world of contemporary art and in the work of an artist?” and “how do you situate printmaking as a visual language within contemporary visual culture?” Each artist looked for the relevance and ‘topicality’ of the graphic medium within their own practice.
The project resulted in a folder, featuring work by each artist, and a box containing six artist books and one textbook. In each artist book, printmaking communicates with the recent oeuvre of the artist in question. In addition to the graphic work, the publication includes the abstract and the documented journey. Mieke Mels took care of the interviews while Johan Pas wrote an essay about the art-historical and social context of both the graphic medium and the Frans Masereel Centrum itself.
