DOCU-PRESS 5: Katja Mater

period: 30.08.2015 → 31.10.2015

You could call Katja Mater a creator of imaginary spaces. A photographer of invisible processes or an installation artist who makes the art work disappear. Mater takes photographs, makes films and drawings and creates installations, using a combination of media. She experiments with materials in dialogue with metaphysical reflection.

At Frans Masereel Centrum, Mater used printing media for the first time. The exhibition presents new work combined with existing work, providing an insight into her working process.

DOCU-PRESS

For the first time in its history, Frans Masereel Centrum invites artists to reside at the centre and make new work in the workshop. During the stay the experiment is central. The artist is being challenged to critically interrogate the printing techniques and place them in relation to his/her own artistic work. It’s a concrete research into the value of graphic techniques for the artistic process, and into the possibilities offered by new printing techniques to translate content-related and thematical questions.

DOCU-PRESS has an explicit documentary nature. The presentation shows the different layers of the creation process and connects different art disciplines. This review on a residency shows what the graphic techniques mean to the artist, and what impulses they can give to an artistic oeuvre. After Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Jan Kempenaers, Gowara Minsa and Carla Scott Fullerton, we welcome the Dutch Katja Mater.

Open Mon-Fri, 10AM to 5PM
Vernissage Sunday 30/08/2015, from 2PM to 6PM, with print performance by Katja Mater and soundscaping by NOBAKOV
