The word is out! This spring, Frans Masereel Centrum launches the first edition of RHIZOMA – biennial for contemporary art.
Spread across five indoor and outdoor venues within walking distance of each other, and happening every two years from 2025 on, the inaugural edition of the international biennial of contemporary art RHIZOMA will showcase video, sculpture, printmaking, painting, and words, and more.
As an artist-centred initiative, RHIZOMA focuses on innovative and experimental artistic practices that offer insight into the essence of art and the world around us. This results in the presentation of several new creations, combined with recent and historical works never before seen in Belgium.
The full list of the 14 participating artists and the thematic framework will be announced in mid-March.
As a preliminary, we are happy to share seven visual impressions that both evoke – and question – Gertrude Stein’s adagium ‘there is no there there’ and invite us to reflect on the underestimated potential of making more memories together.
Artistic director: Stijn Maes
Graphic design: Studio Remco van Bladel
Opening: Saturday, May 24, 2025 (by invitation only)
Opening hours: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Friday-Saturday-Sunday)
