50 years of Frans Masereel Centrum

A year round celebration!

period: 01.01.2022 → 31.12.2022

In 2022, the Frans Masereel Centrum will celebrate its 50th birthday! Over the years, the FMC has grown into a unique contemporary arts center that combines an artist-oriented artistic program with an international residency program for artists and curators, with specific attention to printed matter-at-large.

On the occasion of this anniversary, the Frans Masereel Centrum invited a number of artists who – through their artistic practice – formulate inspiring proposals and reflections on artistry in 2022. What can we learn from them, as an organization that itself once originated as an artist initiative?

The year round public party program includes many new creations, book launches, presentations, a birthday party and an extensive reference book.

In the spring of 2022, Belgian artist Vaast Colson will move into the Frans Masereel Centrum for several months and activate various new trajectories in and around our studios. During the summer, the Berlin based artist collective Slavs&Tatars presents for the very first time an extensive selection of their printed matter, which can be seen as the core of their practice and in which they often preface their other projects. And in the fall we will publish a brand new artist publication by Hannah Black, who wrote her second novella at our request.

In parallel, four contemporary artists developed new work in our studios, as pilot episode of the biennial Hibernus. The new editions of Pélagie Gbaguidi, Emmanuelle Quertain, Océane Vallot and Joris Van de Moortel will be presented in the spring of 2022.

The very first reference work on the history of the Frans Masereel Centrum will be presented during an extensive birthday party in the autumn.

Finally, several complementary projects and collaborations will come up throughout the year, among which a participation project with residents of the municipality of Kasterlee.
