We are looking for interns to assist us in our printmaking studios during the Artist Residencies in 2023.
The Frans Masereel Centrum is a center for contemporary art, combining an artist-oriented exhibition and production schedule with an international residency program for artists and curators, often with a specific focus on printed matter-at-large. Every year, approximately 50 national and international artists are selected for a residency via an open call. During an artist residency, contemporary artists can broaden and deepen their own practice through a multifaceted, print-related project. The focus is on development and creation. They spend five weeks in our studios and are assisted by three studio coordinators (Ivan Durt, Nathan Gotlib and Tom Dries). To strenghten the studio team, we are looking for intern studio assistants.
Your tasks:
You will be available to assist the artists during their residency. This might include various tasks, like helping them print editions and making sure that the workplace is ready to use. You will also help with the general supplies, like giving the artists paper from the supply, as well as keeping our stock up to date and refilling the shelves when products / inks are running out.
Our offer:
The Frans Masereel Centrum is an international environment, so you’ll work closely with artists from all over the world. We stay up-to-date with contemporary printmaking applications and we provide expert advice to our residents about the different techniques that are offered. As studio staff, you will be experimenting with different applications of all the printmaking techniques. This includes running test strips for new printing equipment (new exposure unit, different acids, …), as well as knowing the ins and outs of our digital printers.
We would also like to encourage the intern to develop their own practice. You are invited to work on your own projects during one week following the five week internship. You will have access to the available equipment. For the digital atelier, base-cost will be charged (same as the residents).
Intern profile:
- You are proficient in printmaking
- You are fluent in English
- You are interested in learning the workings of a professional printmaking workplace
- You take initiative and are able to work autonomously
Due to the structure of our residencies you need to be available for a period of 5 successive weeks. While we can advise you on the possibilities, you will have to arrange accommodation and travel yourself. You are expected to work 5 days a week. These are the internship periods:
- 9 January 2023 – 10 February 2023
- 13 February 2023 – 17 March 2023
- 3 April 2023 – 5 May 2023
- 22 May 2023 – 23 June 2023
- 3 July 2023 – 4 August 2023
- 21 August – 22 September 2023
Deadline to apply: 30 November 2022
Application process:
Please send a CV and motivation letter to nathan.gotlib@vlaanderen.be, including the following:
- Which printmaking techniques are you most familiar with?
- Examples of your work
- Prior relevant experience
- Up to two references (tutor, colleagues, …)
