RHIZOMA

Introductory note ahead of inaugural edition in 2025

period: 24.05.2025 → 13.07.2025

The entire staff of the Frans Masereel Centrum is currently preparing its most ambitious project to date: RHIZOMA.

Spread across several indoor and outdoor venues within walking distance of each other, and happening every two years from 2025 on, the inaugural edition of the international biennial of contemporary art RHIZOMA will showcase video, sculpture, printmaking, painting, and words, among other things.

Guided by an artist-centred approach, RHIZOMA prioritises innovative and experimental artistic practices that offer insights into the essence of art and the world around us by commissioning and presenting new projects in conjunction with recent and historical works.

The full list of artists and the thematic framework will be announced early 2025. As a preliminary, we are happy to share seven visual impressions that both evoke – and question – Gertrude Stein’s adagium ‘there is no there there’ and invite us to reflect on the underestimated potential of making more memories together.

 Artistic director: Stijn Maes
