Jo Frenken – Monday 27 November 2023, 10 am
A project by Jo Frenken, visual artist, graphic designer and teacher, usually starts in the form of a book, an exhibition can be a spatial translation of that. His fascination for the book has developed during the decades that he, as a participant and tutor graphic techniques, worked at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. His working method is conceptual in origin with a special interest in scientific methods and diptychs.
He exchanged his architecture studies at the Eindhoven University of Technology for monumental design, painting and graphic art at the Maastricht Institute of Arts, and then mixed media and graphic art at the Jan van Eyck Academie.
Initially he worked as a teacher of painting and graphic art, then for almost four decades as a tutor at the Jan van Eyck Academie, in various printing-related positions, and twenty years as a teacher of graphic design at the Master Architecture Maastricht.
From 2011 he has set up a new Printing & Publishing Lab at the Jan van Eyck Academie, specialised in stencil printing techniques. He initiated and organised the Magical Riso Biennale, a global gathering of stencil printing experts.
After his retirement he focusses on his own art practice and occasionally teaches, give workshops and lectures, with a special interest in artists books.
He will remain affiliated with the Jan van Eyck Academie as a volunteer expert.
