Applying for an Essay Residency in 2022 is possible until May 19, 2021 at noon (CET).

Critics, writers, artists, curators and academics can reside at the Centrum Frans Masereel to conduct theoretical research about the medium of printmaking, prepare a critical text on a print-related topic, develop ideas for curatorial projects, etc.

Residency Program

An Essay Residence is a unique opportunity to work in seclusion on a manuscript, draw up outlines for a new research or exhibition project or write an essay, while embedded in a dynamic arts centre, situated in a wooded area and populated by professional artists.

Besides an individual living and writing space, you have access to all our facilities, including the library. If you wish, you can also participate in the common activities we organise once a week: informal discussion of everyone’s project, individual feedback moments with external artistic mentors (curators, critics, gallerists, …), collection moment, excursion, …

Due to inventory works, access to the collection is currently limited.

Price

€175 per week

(incl. accommodation in an individual, fully equipped bungalow)

How to sign up?

Applying is done digitally and in English via the online application form, where you can also upload your files.

Besides a critical statement (about your approach in general) and a project description (stating the intended goals and purposes of your stay, as well as your motivation), the application should also contain documentation of recent texts, projects or works (dating back no longer than 5 years) and a brief CV plus bibliography.

The deadline for applying is May 19, 2021 at noon (CET).

Note: Max. 10 MB per file.

Criteria

The selection committee will assess your application based on the following criteria:
– the critical claim of your practice and approach, and the potential to develop new insights
– the scope and significance of your proposal for a residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum
– your motivation

The outcome of the selection procedure will be communicated mid-August.

General conditions

The cost of 175 euro per week includes accommodation, sheets and towels, and access to all facilities – but not the use of the workshop nor basic materials. Partners and children are welcome at no extra cost. Please mention this in your application.

For more information about the general conditions please read the Frans Masereel Centrum house rules (which you can find here or in our information brochure that we send you after you’re selected).

Please note:

– The languages of communication at the Frans Masereel Centrum are Dutch and English. We expect you to master the English language sufficiently to be able to converse and collaborate with fellow residents and staff members.
– The only way to sign up for a residency is via the online application form.
