Tom Liekens

My work consists of monumental paintings with a specific imagery language. A subject that keeps coming back in my work is nature in its artificial form, like we know it from zoos and natural history musems. Or the way landscapes and animals were represented in art history, in fairy tales or in films. My work is full of quotes referring to art and cultural history. During my residency I made large collages from monotypes, engravings and woodcuts. I have experimented a lot and was looking for a direct approach of the graphic medium. The results correspond with the rest of my oeuvre, both in form as in content.
It resulted in three large works: Kongo Room, Jungle room and Taxidermist.
My residency was a very labour-intensive period on which I look back with a lot of satisfaction. My graphic works are, thanks to my stays in Frans Masereel Centrum, a substantial part of my artistic practice, of equal value as my paintings. I dare say that thanks to my stays in Frans Masereel Centrum, I've really been smitten by the graphic medium and all its imagery possibilities.
