"The medium of etching is highly artisanal, in that it is a blend of process, handicraft and substance. I thought of it as a medium that enabled me to use my previous works, sculptures, collages and paintings as a basis and to transpose them to this medium, which was entirely new to me.

The combination of the etching needle, copper plate and the etching inks gave me a new perspective of my current work, which produced refreshing results. Even though it initially entailed an earlier graphic language, in hindsight it held a much closer affinity, that is to say it offered the opportunity to create a lot more affinity with the art of painting. In applying the ink onto the copper plate, it was easy to manipulate ink thickness, which determines the character of each separate print. The quest for contemporary imagery certainly took an unexpectedly fertile turn using this medium."
