Context has always been the issue of the ten years of my art practice. Though the understanding of what context is gradually changes. While the first installations and site-specific works were close related to architectural and immediate visual relations, the recent work explores symbolic and social contexts in which images are immersed.
During the residency at Frans Masereel Centrum, I was able to work for the first time with historical context, having as a starting point found clichés from the late sixties and the beginning of seventies, dictatorship period in Brazil. The use of these images brings ethical issues to the printing process in all stages, that can’t be guided just by esthetic reasons. Actually, the decision to re-print clichés that have been used to spread authoritarian ideology, the formal options, edition size and even signing it or not is a very challenging process.
