Inke Coolen (1979) graduated in 2002 at Sint Lukas Brusses, in print art.
Caroline Coolen (1975) graduated in 1998 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, in sculpting, at at Hisk in 2001.
Because of their common interests for some thematics (the animal motive, heraldry, historical prints,...) and the visual approach of their subjects (irony, intertextuality/sampling), we think it best to apply for a residency together.
Though the medium of print is more of a sporadic medium to Caroline Coolen, it is the most important medium for Inke Coolen to express her impressions and experiences in a changing world. She processes her experiences in a collage-like way: sampling. Existing images are taken out of their context, rearranged and reinterpreted, thus creating new meanings and images.
This working method is very similar to that of Caroline Coolen. Besides sculpting, Caroline Coolen spends a lot of time drawing. This translates into large installations or charcoal drawings of a large format.
The residency didn't create joint work, but it did increase the concentration and reflection on our artistic work.
