For my residential time at the Frans Masereel Centrum, I’ve set my subject of research to ‘the background’.
I’ve structured my stay with experiments. Experimenting with material, colours, and mostly transparencies. The second week, I took the time to construct several pinhole cameras. Most images are taken on or around the Frans Masereel Centum.
For the experiments I’ve worked on a 11 x 16 cm format, enabling me to get many different results in one big print. Most relevant prints of this size I have bound together into a book for future reference.
From the blurry pictures I took with the pinhole cameras, I selected 6 crops with which I worked for my final series. I printed the crops on top of each other with very transparant monochrome inks. In these series I wanted to create an image in which background and foreground become one image all together. An image that refers to what you see when you can catch your own reflection in a window. It is constructed from a portrait, a curtain, a shine of light, and the background of the reflection itself.
