OUT OF SHAPE
Since its founding in 2011, Polly’s Picture Show (NL) has realized several projects within the field of contemporary photography, such as exhibitions, installations and publications. Even though photography is Polly’s Picture Show’s starting point, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all projects result in solely pictures. It’s Polly’s Picture Show’s aim to research the boundaries of photographic medium.
During a 5 week residency in the Frans Masereel Centre Polly's Picture Show has created the publication 'Out of Shape'. Out of Shape focuses on the works of 9 artists, who all draw attention to the importance of shape and form. Each artist contributed to the project by submitting one image of a work. Polly's Picture Show then looked for the fitting printing technique (such as silkscreen and litho), color, size and paper to reproduce this work in an edition of 50. It was Polly's Picture Show's goal to combine the 9 works in a way that values the particularity and individuality of each work. The publication had to be more than a catalogue for a show, it had to be an art piece in itself, and that's how it found its final form of a show in the shape of a box. Like Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise all works have their own existence in a box/publication but together they become the concept of a show where they enter into a dialogue with each other.
On a formalistic approach the works presented in Out of Shape are hold together though color, form and texture. There are solid triangles and squares, morphing outlines and silhouettes, peculiar figures and forms. Forms of expectations, or the form that is expected from us. Unruly bended, turned, covered and exposed. In shape or out of shape.
All the works are printed and reinterpreted by Polly's Picture Show in Frans Masereel Centre.
The nine participating artists are:
