DOCU-PRESS 2: Jan Kempenaers

period: 29.06.2014 → 08.08.2014

For the first time, the Belgian art photographer Jan Kempenaers (°1968, Heist-op-den-Berg) presents a series of abstract works he made during his residency at the centre. In this series, he takes a big step from the figurative to the abstract. Jan Kempenaers is known for his detailed series of urban and natural landscapes where buildings and natural elements function as sculptural objects. But his step towards abstract work is not so surprising.

The art works are a natural evolution from figurative photography to abstract prints. The starting point was an abstract photograph. During the graphic process, Kempenaers printed three to four layers on top of each other. As the artistic manual labor is much more physical than taking a digital photo, the body takes on an important role again.

In this DOCU-PRESS 2, you will experience Jan Kempenaers’ evolution from figurative photography to abstract prints visually.

DOCU-PRESS

For the first time in its history, Frans Masereel Centrum invites artists to reside at the centre and make new work in the workshop. During the stay the experiment is central. The artist is being challenged to critically interrogate the printing techniques and place them in relation to his/her own artistic work. It’s a concrete research into the value of graphic techniques for the artistic process, and into the possibilities offered by new printing techniques to translate content-related and thematical questions.

DOCU-PRESS has an explicit documentary nature. The presentation shows the different layers of the creation process and connects different art disciplines. This review on a residency shows what the graphic techniques mean to the artist, and what impulses they can give to an artistic oeuvre.

Opening Sunday June 29th 3 PM
4 PM concert Moto (Dirk Elst & Joy Voncken)
7 PM DJ Michiel Helbig

Open Mon-Fri, 9 AM to 5 PM
