Artist Residency

Period
January-September 2026
Duration
5 weeks

Our five weeks Artist Residency program welcomes contemporary artists to realize an individual, multiform, print-related project that matches their artistic practice. The focus of the Artist Residency program lies on development and creation in one or more of our workshops.

Usually nine artists work and stay at the same time at the site of the Frans Masereel Centrum, so that there is always enough personal space for concentration and creation, alternated with informal moments of consultation, meeting and feedback among peers from all over the world. Our location in a wooded area is for many an extra asset.

At the Frans Masereel Centrum, you will have access to our various professionally equipped printmaking facilities, including typography with wooden or lead typesetting, intaglio, screenprinting, riso, UV-printing and lasercutting. No prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required and our studio staff will be available for technical assistance. However, residents are expected to be able to work autonomously and realize their project independently.
Some artists prefer to develop a more process-oriented research project. In that case, prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required.

Residency Program

WEEK 1:
Welcome and introduction to the fellow residents and the FMC team.

Masterclasses on the printmaking techniques of your choosing.

WEEK 2, 3 & 4:
Creation and development of your project, with the support of our studio coordinators.

WEEK 5:
Finalisation and reflection during a collection moment (a feedback and archive session with the studio staff).

Each residency program also includes two individual feedback moments with visiting tutors, as well as some collective conversations.

Possible residency periods 2026

More information follows.

Price

A residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum includes not only the use of the studios, technical support, basic materials and a peripheral program, but also individual accommodation in a fully equipped artist’s studio and the use of sheets, towels, washing machine and dryer. You must provide paper and specific inks yourself. Partners and children are welcome at no extra cost.

Residents pay 1,850 euro for a residency of five weeks as a contribution to the expenses of their stay. Thanks to an important subsidy from the Flemish Community, it is possible to keep this contribution as low as possible.
We encourage artists to seek additional funding to subsidize this participation fee, as well as costs related to traveling and living, the use of material and other remaining costs.

How to sign up?

Applying is done digitally and in English (or Dutch) via an online application form.

Besides an artist statement (about your work in general) and a project proposal (stating the intended goals and purposes of your stay, as well as your motivation), the application should also contain documentation of recent work (dating back no longer than 5 years) and a brief CV.
