In 2011, the Frans Masereel Centum invited Dirk Elst to select a number of artists for a residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum, with the intention of compiling a group exhibition with the artists and their work in the NICC in Antwerp. The exhibition Characters Make Stories showed new work by Hallveig Agustsdottir, Stijn Cole, Dirk Elst, Wouter Feyaerts, Kelly Schacht and Vadim Vosters. Stijn Van Dorpe also presented his work Characters Make Stories, at the invitation of Kelly Schacht.
The publication A preface for a project was created parallel to this exhibition and consists of a collection of comments and footnotes annotating the project. It is simultaneously a manual for the exhibition and a manual for a potential different project. Reflections on collectivity, representation and ownership are the main focal points.
